Spread the love

A small, plump, short-tailed bird that is transformed into a tiny bundle of color with a bright orange back, yellow belly, and contrasting black cap!

MEET THE ORANGE-COLLARED MANAKIN

The Orange-collared ManakinsManacus aurantiacus, are an endemic resident breeder in Costa Rica and western Panama. A compact short-tailed bird with a heavy hooked bill, orange legs as well as brightly colored male plumage. It averages 10 cm / 4 in length and weighs around 15.5 g.  Males have a black crown, wings and tail, and a black band across the midback. The rest of the head, neck, breast, and upper back are orange.

The rump is olive-green and the abdomen is bright yellow. The male wings are heavily modified, with the five outer primaries (longest wing feathers) very narrow for their outer half, and the inner primaries (longest wing feathers) thickened and bowed. This feature is shared only by the male White-collared Manakin. Females and young males share similarities, such as an olive-green shade with a yellow belly.

These birds are endemic resident breeders in Costa Rica and western Panama.

Orange collared manakins like to live in the lowlands and foothills of the Pacific slope up to 1100 m, where they inhabit semi-open moist forested areas, tall secondary growth, as well as shady plantations, and gardens.

They feed low in the trees on fruit and also take some insects.

During the breeding season the female lays two brown-speckled grey eggs in a shallow cup nest 0.5-2.5 m high in a horizontal tree fork. She is also responsible for nest-building, incubation of the eggs for 18-21 days, and care of the young since manakins do not form stable pairs.

This bird has a somewhat restricted range but is fairly common. The population trend is thought to be slowly decreasing owing to the destruction of its habitat.
